Jennifer Johnson, The Pierce County Homeless Liaison, spoke at The Exchange Club. In 2001, "The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act" was passed under the "No Child Left Behind Act". Under this program, children in homeless situations have the right to got to school, no matter where they live or how long they have lived there. "Homeless" could be a result of eviction or foreclosure, parents in jail or financially unable to care for their child, runaways, drug related issues and more. Temporary housing along with Food and clothing are provided as well as foster care in some longer term situations. This program is funded almost 100% by local churches and organizations and works in conjunction with, "The Sycamore Tree" to provide clothing and misc. items needed.
